By Glenn Pierce, Adjutant

Meeting Schedule:

  • Bar Finance & Accounting August 6th at 6:00 pm
  • Membership Meeting August 14th at 7:00 pm
  • SAL Meeting August 21st at 6:00 pm

Rick Hals, Commander - This is my first Post Talk letter so please bear with me. It is my honor to have worked with Darcy Doble, Post Commander, and I thank her for a job well done. Also, I would like to thank all who helped or participated in our Midsummer celebration, it was a job well done and a great team effort. With that being said, I look forward to the next year, working with a great team of officers, manager and staff.

I want to remind all officers for the 2018 – 19 year to be at the legion by 6:00 PM on our next meeting day, August 14th. Pictures will be taken, please bring hat and legion shirt.

Michelle Still, Auxiliary President - "In the spirit of service not self..." I want to share that our American Legion Family Team raised at least $2800 at the Relay for Life event! It was a very hot night, but we had fun, and it's good to see our community pulling together. "In the spirit of service not self..." I want to recognize the dedication and efforts of the women in our unit who contribute so much to veterans, God and country. We received three awards from the 10th District for public relations, incorporating music into our programs, and for our historical reporting. Ask me, I would love to share more about our efforts.

Thank you everyone for your support, dedication and contributions.

Glenn Pierce, Adjutant - The Department of Revenue reminds military members to take advantage of a refundable Minnesota tax credit. The 2014 Credit for Military Service in a Combat Zone expires for most qualifying military members on October 15, 2018. You may qualify for $120 per month or partial month served.

Orv Otterness, Post Service Officer - Recently I attended the 100th American Legion State Convention held this year in Rochester. I was appointed a Teller but with no opposition for offices it was a very easy job – nothing! Darrell Redepenning was elected the Commander for 2018-2019. He is a member of the Anoka Post in our Tenth District.

I did obtain some brochures on Insurance that members may be interested in looking over. One is no cost to you if you are a member. Your membership entitles you to a $5,000 Accidental Death Policy. You must enroll by calling 1-800-235-6943 for more information or on line at www.TheLIT.com/LegionCare2 Another insurance option is Emergency Assistance Plus known as EA+. It covers Medical Evacuation services, Medical Assistance service, Assistance for companion’s services, Transportation, Home service, and other vital services. The cost to a member is $114.00 yearly or $144.00 for the family. To get more information or have questions answered call 1-888-293-4008. Another pamphlet of interest is one entitled Making a Difference. It contains a time line of history of the American Legion from its beginnings in 1919 to 2008 and is very interesting. It also includes the meaning of the design of The American Legion’s emblem and the History of the Pledge of Allegiance. You can check this out at www.legion.org.

THE AMERICAN LEGION - 100 YEARS OLD

The 100th National Convention will be held in Minneapolis August 25 through August 30 at the Convention Center. One hundred years ago the first American Legion Convention was held in Minneapolis. Among the plans will be the annual convention parade which will be held Sunday, August 26 beginning at 4 p.m. It will follow Nicollet Ave for about one mile. Check our web site for more details after August 15 or so. As of this Post Talk the parade will include 98 units. There are 14 high school bands and six Legion bands. With 50 states and a few foreign countries involved it should be a good parade to watch. Mark it on your calendars.

Glenn Pierce, North Branch Veterans Memorial Committee - We are moving forward with the North Branch Veterans Memorial being constructed at the North Branch High School campus. We will begin selling the memorial bricks that will surround the inner circle shortly. I will send all members on the Legion email list the brochure and application for the bricks. Some changes we are working for on the final rendition will be the addition of granite monuments by each bench recognizing the 5 branches of service and adding 2 additional flags. We would like to add the POW and state flags to the project.

This project is made possible by the joint efforts of VFW Post 6424, American Legion Post 85, North Branch Area Public Schools, The City of North Branch and the North Branch Beautification Association.
