Michelle Still, Auxiliary President - Happy New Year! Some of our members really enjoyed sharing treats, passing out the pocket pillows we made, and giving of their time to our veterans in assisted living. We also sent pocket pillows to shut ins and our active military. Christmas is behind us, but never forget our spirit of giving should last all year. When you support the American Legion Auxiliary, many veterans and military members and their families benefit from our wide range of programs.

Did you know, both unemployment and homelessness rates run higher for veterans than for the general population? Assisting in activities that help homeless veterans is one of the goals listed in the American Legion Auxiliary National Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation Plan of Action. What can our own unit do? We can donate hats, scarves, mittens/gloves to distribute to homeless veterans. These items are always welcome at homeless shelters and transitional housing projects. If you would like to donate any of these items, please let me know and I will be glad to pick them up and get them to our local VA in St. Cloud.

Just a reminder, if you haven’t paid your dues for 2018, please mail a check for $30 to Mary Lewis at P O Box 285, North Branch, MN. You may also pay your dues online at ALAforVeterans.org. Unfortunately, our membership to date is down from last year. Please renew your membership and actively recruit new members. We need you to help support our programs.

Glenn Pierce, Gaming Manager - If we do not receive some relief from the excessive taxes imposed on us by the State of Minnesota we may have to close our doors. In FY2013 we netted 6.47 cents on every dollar sold to support our programs and building costs. In FY2017 that has dropped to 3.84 cents, by 2020 is expected to be under 2 cents and before 2022 it may be a
negative number, info from the ACM website www.alliedcharitiesmn.org Without charitable gaming we cannot support our current programs or even keep the doors open on our building.

Please contact our representative Anne Neu (651)296-5377 or Senator Mark Koran (651)296-5419 to ask for relief. Please call, write or email to ask for relief.
