Darcy Doble, Commander - Are you ready for corned beef and cabbage? The Legion will be hosting the annual Corned beef and cabbage dinner on March 17th starting at 5pm until it is gone. This goes fast, so be there early enough to enjoy. Have a fun St. Patrick's Day and a very Happy Easter.

Orville Otterness, Post Service Officer - Legislators are busy this time of year. Don’t forget to phone, email or communicate by letter to your legislators to let them know how you stand on legislation that will affect veterans. There is a big meeting planned for several veteran’s organizations to meet in March 12. There will be a pre-rally meeting and free breakfast on the fifth floor of the Veterans Service Building from 8:00 until 9:45 a.m. At 10 a.m. there will be a rally in the rotunda of the State Capitol building, there will be regional rooms available to visit with lawmakers beginning at 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome. You can take in the whole agenda or a part of it. It is important we let our legislators know what we would like to see supported. And, again, if you have problems regarding issues that include health care, schooling, etc. please make an appointment to visit with your Chisago County Veterans Service Officer whose office is located in the County Court House.

Glenn Pierce, Gaming Manager - We now have a bill number in the Senate for our commission/study of charitable gaming taxation. SF2524 (attached) was heard in State Government Finance committee on Tuesday, February 27 at 1 pm in room 1200 of the Minnesota Senate Building. Our chief author is Senator Lang. Co-authors are Senator Newton, Senator Chamberlain and Senator Rest. We thank them for their support. If any of these represent you please thank them. Please ask your Senator to support the bill.

Michelle Still, Auxiliary President - As we continue with winter, we have fun things planned to get out of the house. We are hosting our second movie night for grandmothers, mothers, daughters and all women on Friday, March 23 at 7:00 PM at the American Legion. This is an event for the community, and I am hoping our auxiliary members and junior members come and
invite their girlfriends to join us. We had a nice time last year. The movie will have a ‘G’ rating. The veterans in assisted living were given a Valentine from our unit. Thank you ladies for remembering them. It may seem like a simple gift, but I know it is appreciated and noticed by many.

Our next regular meeting is March 13 at 7:30 PM. Please join us.

Randy Koivisto, Membership Chair - Our Membership Awards night was held at our February 2018 general membership meeting. Those present receiving awards were, Past National Chaplain, Michas Ohnstad for 70 years in the Legion, Anthony Fischer for 50 years, past Post 85 Sgt. At Arms, John Lindhart for 40 years, Current Post Adjutant Glenn Pierce, Glen Boyce, and Brian LaBelle for 30 years, current Post 85 Commander, Darcy Doble for 25 years. Russ Eblen, and William Sheppard, for 20 years. Post 85 is fortunate to have members that are dedicated to serving our veterans over the long term, united in a common cause.

Congratulations to our present Sgt. At Arms, Tom Tallarico, who was honored with the 2017 Member of the Year award! Tom has done an outstanding job taking care of the honor guard duties, and for just plain making us look good. We’ve received numerous positive comments for our military funeral honors, due in no small part by Tom’s efforts while leading the joint Legion-VFW honor guard. Every post has a core of volunteers that make things happen, and Tom is a solid part of that group.

Jill Bigley, Director NBALR - North Branch American Legion Riders (NBALR) is a volunteer organization dedicated to Veterans (active, retired or disabled), military families, local area families and worthy benefits with other organizations.

Our 2018 activities include:

  • A fundraiser at the NB County Market brat stand.
  • Saturday April 7th NBALR will be holding our Second Spring Veterans Dinner Fundraiser at the North Branch American Legion post 85.
  • We will have the pleasure and honor of presenting $500 scholarships to two students with military backgrounds.
  • You will be able to find us supporting CSOAF on June 9th for the Red Bull motorcycle run and June 24th for their Red Bull Military Appreciation day.
  • Please join us July 14th for our 6th annual Christmas in July motorcycle run. We will be raising money for our Fall Veteran's dinner and Christmas for the families of our deployed or wounded warriors. This is a great cause so do please join us!
